Physical Education

Intent

At Birchwood, PE inspires all pupils to participate in competitive sports and other physically-demanding activities to build character and help to embed values such as fairness and respect. Birchwood’s overall aim is to provide opportunities for pupils to become physically confident in ways which supports their health and fitness and allows all children to be physically active for sustained periods of time.

Through PE children will develop knowledge and understanding of how they can lead healthy, active lives and the importance of this. Birchwood deliver PE through dance, games and gymnastics. Swimming and outdoor adventurous activities also take place in Key Stage 2.

The curriculum overview has been designed to ensure that the National Curriculum requirements are fulfilled using a spiral curriculum design, thus ensuring that all children will regularly be revisiting knowledge, linking skills through different sports and being exposed to a variety of different sports. The curriculum map is organised into the substantive knowledge, disciplinary knowledge and vocabulary.

Implementation

To ensure that children at Birchwood are being provided with the best possible PE education, teachers use the curriculum overview to plan learning.

The curriculum overview outlines the substantive and disciplinary knowledge to be taught in each year group. Beginning with EYFS and KS1 which focusses on developing fundamental movement skills such as running, jumping, throwing, catching, balancing, agility and coordination whilst participating in team games. This then allows KS2 children to build on their knowledge and skills applying these to sports specific lessons.  In addition to this KS2 children, develop an understanding of how to evaluate their performance by recognising their successes and when they need to improve. Our curriculum allows children to have experience of a wide range of sports. At Birchwood, children have experience of sports such as: dodgeball, hockey, netball, rounders, cricket and tag rugby.

Teachers work collaboratively with external agencies such as Top Score, Embody Dance and Aston Villa to provide ongoing CPD opportunities for staff in each of the areas of PE.

At Birchwood we provide children with the opportunity to attend a wide range of extra-curricular clubs both within school hours (BASE Academy) and outside of these hours. Birchwood compete in a range of sporting events, competing within both inter and intra-school events.

Impact

We measure the impact of our curriculum through the following methods: pupil discussions and interviews about their learning; assessment of standards, lesson visits, videos and photographs.

Birchwood children are provided with a well sequenced PE curriculum that allows them to learn and develop skills and then apply these within a variety of different sports, thus preparing them for the next stage in their education.

At Birchwood, the opportunities provided allow pupils to become physically confident in ways that support their health and fitness and allow all children to be physically active for a sustained period of time. The high-quality PE curriculum inspires all pupils to participate in competitive sports and other physically demanding activities whilst building character and embedding values such as fairness and respect.
