What is Safeguarding?

What is Safeguarding?

Safeguarding is the term used to describe all of the things we do at Birchwood to keep children safe. It is the actions we take to both promote the welfare of children and to protect them from harm.

Safeguarding means
  • Providing help and support to meet the needs of children as soon as problems emerge
  • Protecting children from maltreatment, whether that is within or outside the home, including online
  • Preventing the impairment of children’s mental and physical health or development
  • Ensuring that children grow up in circumstances consistent with the provision of safe and effective care
  • Taking action to enable all children to have the best outcomes
Safeguarding is everyone's responsibility and all staff at Birchwood receive safeguarding training on an annual basis, with regular updates throughout the year.

Our Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL) is Mrs Webb.  Mr Coleman, Miss Haynes and Mrs Scotchmer are Deputy Designated Safeguarding Leads (DDSL).
