Birchwood's School Library
We are extremely lucky to have a well resourced and presented library in the centre of our school.
In 2021 we decided to revamp our library adding new graphics to the walls linked to well known children's literature. We also had a piece of art to honour Mrs Willis, a long standing teacher at Birchwood who retired. This also led to the new name 'Willis' World of Words'. We also finished it off by purchasing new furniture for children to enjoy.
Each class has a dedicated library slot each week where they are able to come and spend some time choosing a new library book to take home, enjoy and share with their families. Mrs Spencer is also on hand in the library to support children with their choices, search our vast library collection and support Miss Lowe and Mrs Hill with ensuring our library promotes the importance of reading.
Book Baskets
Each week Miss Lowe changes our library basket to match the 'Thought and Talk' theme for that week. These texts are then used by staff and children if they wish to reflect on the theme spoken about as part of our PSHE Check In and Check Out as well as in assemblies.
We also have a Miss Lowe Recommends basket for EYFS, Year 1 and Year 2 and then a second one for Years 3,4,5 and 6 where some of Miss Lowe's favourites are shown. Children are welcome to choose these books as their library book to take home.
Our children enjoy spending time in our library, browsing the shelves and discussing their book choices with their friends.
'Look, I've got Monkey Puzzle. I haven't read this for ages!' Reception child.
'I think I am going to choose this book, the front cover looks good. I love animals,' Year 1 child.
